Just as they did during the March regional banking crisis, higher rates are expected to lead to a jump in losses on banks' bond portfolios and contribute to funding pressures as institutions are forced to pay higher rates for deposits. The issue constrains the bank's interest revenue and has made the lender the worst stock performer this year among the top six U.S. institutions. Expectations on the impact of higher rates on banks' balance sheets varied. Still, others including KBW and UBS analysts said that other factors could soften the capital hit from higher rates for most of the industry. There's also concern that higher interest rates will result in ballooning losses in commercial real estate and industrial loans.

In the almost-year since the historic climate bill was passed, 270 new clean energy projects have been announced with investments totaling $130 billion, according to a tally from Bank of America . Companies that build clean technology and their suppliers will be big winners as energy infrastructure goes through the transition from depending on fossil fuels to decarbonized sources of energy, a recent BofA research note said. In that research note, BofA identified stocks that stand to benefit from the IRA, organized by themes. The list includes only stocks that BofA has rated as "buy," and this list includes only those that have a climate tie-in. (The IRA also included some reforms to prescription drugs, but stocks related to those provisions are excluded here.)

Silicon Valley Bank might have benefited from more debt. A lot of discussion right now is about the bonds that American banks hold. One tidbit from lawmakers’ grilling of regulators should catch investors’ attention: a proposal to expand a requirement for issuing long-term debt. Today this debt requirement applies only to megabanks with over $700 billion in assets, the likes of JPMorgan Chase or Bank of America . Regulators are looking at expanding it to banks with over $250 billion of assets and even smaller, The Wall Street Journal has reported.
Cory Booker and Raphael Warnock have urged the CEOs of 10 major banks to waive overdraft and nonsufficient fund fees that could cost some Americans more than $100 a day in the wake of the failures of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank. The letters went to the CEOs of Wells Fargo , U.S. Bank , Truist Financial Corp ., TD Bank , Regions Financial Corp ., PNC Bank , JPMorgan Chase , Huntington National Bank , Citizens Bank and Bank of America . Regulators shuttered New York-based Signature Bank days later in an effort to stall a potential banking crisis. Booker and Warnock said banking customers whose paydays fell between March 10 and March 13 were unable to receive or deposit checks from payroll providers banking with SVB and Signature Bank. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Tuesday said the department is prepared to guarantee all deposits for financial institutions beyond SVB and Signature Bank if the crisis worsens.
Regional banks PNC and U.S. Bancorp could prove smart picks in the sector while it's still feeling pressure from the latest crisis, Wells Fargo said. Investors have zeroed in on regional bank stocks in recent days while trying to decipher whether plans to help First Republic shore up liquidity are enough to keep the bank afloat. The SPDR S & P Regional Bank ETF (KRE) has risen 6% this week, regaining some of the ground lost last week, when it slid 14%. U.S. Bancorp, the parent of U.S. Bank, completed its acquisition of Union Bank's regional franchise near the end of 2022. 'Highest quality banks' Mayo called both among the "highest quality banks," noting a strong history of underwriting.
Many lower-income Americans who left the workforce when the pandemic began three years ago are staying on the sidelines because of a lack of child care, a factor contributing to worker shortages and historically low unemployment. An estimated 380,000 Americans in their prime working years, aged 25 to 54, held jobs before the pandemic but no longer did late last year, according to estimates from Bank of America . Bank economists said the lack of affordable and quality child care is a significant factor.
2022 was the worst year the "60/40 portfolio" had since 1926 . But Morgan Stanley 's Jim Caron is unconvinced by the rally, calling the 60/40 strategy "a thing of the past." "But that was when interest rates were falling from 1980 to 2021. The logic of holding a 60/40 portfolio for the long term appears "broken," he wrote in a Feb. 13 note. The shift from a 2% [average fed funds rate] world to a 5% world means structurally higher inflation and interest rates," he said.
Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway has dumped most of its stake in TSMC, just months after buying the Taiwanese chipmaker's stock. TSMC TSMC, meanwhile, is sometimes seen as a barometer of the strength of the U.S. consumer, with Apple among its biggest customers. This is a Game of Thrones battle and AI is here to stay with Nvidia a great play on that front. TSMC is a global chip recovery play that is well positioned with Nvidia in the left lane of innovation," he told CNBC Pro. "TSMC is the short-term play with Nvidia more of the longer-term AI bet."
"If the government did not intervene for Bank of America and the other banks, Bank of America would have failed." The bank reported net income of $31.9 billion in 2021, compared with just $4 billion in 2008. "This is unique to the banking industry and Bank of America being one of the largest banks, stands to benefit the most." "The big change at Bank of America is that they have gone from irresponsible growth to responsible growth," said Mayo. "One key aspect of Bank of America's responsible growth is to say no and no more often," explained Mayo.

Since 2013, an equal-weighted basket of shared favorites has outpaced the S & P 500 in 58% of the months. The basket has underperformed the S & P 500 by 3 percentage points so far this year, "consistent with other periods of market stress," Kostin wrote. However, since the market rally in June, it has outperformed the S & P, he said. Lastly, Wells Fargo 's stock is down about 12% in 2022.
